Patch with velcro of the 53nd Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine
The symbolism of the sleeve insignia of the 53rd separate mechanized brigade was taken from the protective amulet (medallion, talisman) of Vladimir Monomakh, the ruler of Kievan Rus at the turn of the 11th-12th centuries.
The amulet of Vladimir Monomakh (another common name for the amulet is “Chernihiv hryvnia”) was found in 1821 on the banks of the Belous River near Chernigov. Metropolitan Evgeny (Bolkhovitinov) suggested that the found amulet could belong to Vladimir Monomakh, this version is supported by almost all researchers.
The amulet depicts a serpentine figure of the Scythian goddess Api. Api is the goddess of earth and fertility, the Great Mother, the ancestor of the Scythians.
According to another version, which is followed by a smaller number of researchers, the amulet of Vladimir Monomakh was an amulet called Gorgoneion.
Gorgoneion - was a special apotropaic amulet showing the Gorgon head. Gorgo Medusa from Greek mythology.
Amulets with the image of the Scythian goddess Api or with the head of the Gorgon Medusa are used to protect against illness and death.
Thus, the image of the Scythian goddess Api on the sleeve insignia of the 53rd separate mechanized brigade is intended to protect military personnel from death and illness.
